What Is a Concussion?

Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a force to the head. It doesn’t always involve a loss of consciousness.

While most healthy adults recover within 10 days, some people continue to experience symptoms beyond two to three weeks. This is known as persistent-concussion symptoms (PCS), and it can affect every aspect of daily work and study to relationships and wellbeing.

Common causes include sporting injuries, falls, motor vehicle accidents, and workplace incidents.

Interdisciplinary Concussion care

Concussion can affect you physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. That’s why our care is interdisciplinary; your clinicians collaborate across disciplines with a shared understanding of your goals, so every aspect of your recovery is considered together, not in isolation. Your assessment and rehabilitation program will be individualised and targeted to your specific needs for recovery.

Neuro Physiotherapy

Addressing dizziness, balance issues, neck pain, headaches, and physical deconditioning. Your physiotherapist will design a graded return-to-activity program tailored to your symptoms and goals.

Addressing the psychological impact of concussion, including anxiety, low mood, adjustment difficulties, and the cognitive effects that can follow a brain injury. Our psychology services are focused exclusively on brain injury and neurological conditions.

Helping you return to meaningful daily activities; work, study, driving, and home life. Your Occupational therapist will support cognitive rehabilitation and practical strategies for fatigue management and daily function.

Supporting communication, word-finding, cognitive-communication, and any swallowing changes following concussion. Your speech pathologist will target the areas that most affect your daily participation.

Supporting safe, graduated return to physical activity. Your exercise physiologist will help you build cardiovascular tolerance and manage fatigue, vital elements of concussion recovery.

Providing support, counselling, and advocacy as you navigate the personal and practical challenges that concussion can bring including impacts on work, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.

Every person’s experience is different, which is why personalised, interdisciplinary support is essential.
