What Is a Brain Injury?

Brain injury refers to any damage to the brain that affects how it functions. It’s broadly categorised
into two types:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Caused by an external force such as a fall, motor vehicle
accident, sports injury, or assault. TBI severity ranges from mild (e.g., concussion) to severe (e.g., prolonged loss of consciousness, brain bleeding).
  • Acquired Brain Injury (ABI): Includes any brain injury that occurs after birth and is not
hereditary or congenital. It encompasses traumatic injuries but also includes non-traumatic causes such as:
    • Stroke
    • Brain tumour
    • Hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain)
    • Infections (e.g., meningitis, encephalitis)
    • Substance abuse or toxic exposure

In Australia, it’s estimated that 1 in 45 people live with an acquired brain injury that affects their
daily life.

Common Symptoms of Brain Injury

Brain injuries can lead to a wide range of physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural symptoms. These may emerge immediately after injury or evolve over time, depending on the type, location, and severity of the damage.

Physical Symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or balance issues
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis
  • Sensory changes (e.g., vision, hearing, smell)
  • Seizures
  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating or processing information
  • Poor judgement or problem-solving
  • Communication difficulties (expressing or understanding language)
  • Mood swings or irritability
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Reduced impulse control
  • Lack of motivation or initiative (apathy)

Every person’s experience is different, which is why personalised, interdisciplinary support is essential.

Our Interdisciplinary Approach to Care

At ONE Rehabilitation Service, we deliver interdisciplinary care — the gold standard in brain injury rehabilitation.

Unlike multidisciplinary care, where clinicians work in parallel but often separately, interdisciplinary care means our team actively collaborates across disciplines to develop and deliver a unified, client-centred plan. We meet regularly to review progress, problem-solve complex issues together, and adjust goals in real time. The result? A more coordinated, efficient, and holistic approach to rehabilitation.

This model ensures:

  • Shared understanding across all therapists
  • Consistent messaging and strategies for the client and their supports
  • Reduced duplication and better use of therapy time
  • A seamless, person-centred experience

This is especially important in brain injury recovery, where physical, cognitive, emotional, and social challenges are deeply interconnected.

How Allied Health Treatment Can Help

Our team at ONE Rehabilitation Service provides coordinated, holistic care tailored to the needs of each client. We work closely with clients, families, case managers and support coordinators to set meaningful goals and achieve real outcomes.

Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat movement and balance issues following brain injury.

Therapy may involve:

  • Re-training walking or mobility
  • Reducing muscle spasticity or tightness
  • Improving coordination and strength
  • Preventing secondary complications such as contractures or falls

Physiotherapy plays a key role in helping people move more safely and confidently through everyday life.

Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiologists develop safe, structured physical activity plans to rebuild endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and muscular strength. This can:

  • Improve energy levels and reduce fatigue
  • Support mental health and sleep quality
  • Assist with weight and metabolic health

Exercise is also associated with neuroplasticity which is the brain’s ability to reorganise and heal over time.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists help people with brain injury regain independence in daily tasks such as showering, dressing, cooking, working, or parenting. Support might include:

  • Cognitive rehabilitation and memory strategies
  • Fatigue management and pacing
  • Sensory regulation
  • Assistive technology prescription
  • Home and workplace modifications
  • Upper limb therapy

Occupational therapists also play a vital role in helping people build independence, adapt activities, return to work or study, and reintegrate into the community.

Speech Pathology

Brain injury can impact how a person communicates, swallows, or understands others. Speech pathologists assist with:

  • Speech clarity and fluency
  • Language comprehension and expression
  • Social communication skills
  • Cognitive-communication (attention, memory, reasoning)
  • Safe swallowing strategies
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods

This support is crucial for rebuilding relationships and restoring autonomy.

Psychology

A brain injury often affects a person’s sense of self and emotional wellbeing. Our psychologists provide compassionate, trauma-informed care to help people:

  • Process grief, adjustment, or identity changes
  • Manage anxiety, depression, or PTSD
  • Build resilience and coping strategies
  • Improve motivation and emotional regulation

Psychological support to manage the emotional changes following a significant medical event is a crucial part of your recovery and ability to participate in therapy

Social Work

Social workers assist with navigating the broader system. This can include:

  • Accessing and navigating NDIS or other funding pathways
  • Connecting with community supports
  • Coordinating services
  • Providing case management
  • Advocating for clients’ rights
  • Supporting families and carers
  • Counselling

Following an Acquired Brain Injury, people need support to navigate the numerous changes and the impact these will have on their lives.

Why Choose ONE Rehabilitation Service?

We are not a generalist clinic, and that’s by design. ONE Rehabilitation Service is exclusively dedicated to neurological care and brain injury rehabilitation is what we do, every day. Every
clinician on our team has a special focus in working with complex neurological conditions, including ABI and TBI.

  • Our clinicians are specially trained in brain injury recovery.
  • We offer evidence-based, interdisciplinary care – recognised internationally as the best practice for ABI/TBI.
  • Your therapy is goal-driven and functional, focused on outcomes that matter to you:
returning to work, improving relationships, or increasing independence.
  • We understand the complex emotional and behavioural aspects of brain injury, not just the physical symptoms.
  • We provide therapy in both a clinic setting as well as your personal context in the community. Research evidence indicates that contextual therapy is the gold standard for supporting progress for people with brain injury.

What does this mean for you?

  • You’re working with clinicians who really understand brain injury – from subtle cognitive
    deficits to severe physical limitations.
  • We provide evidence-based, tailored interventions based on the latest research in
    neurorehabilitation.
  • Our services are collaborative and coordinated, meaning our team works together toward
shared goals with you at the centre.
  • We prioritise real-world outcomes – not just improvement in the clinic, but at home, in relationships, and in the community.
  • We will work closely alongside any external service providers and your medical team,
participating in case conferences and enabling continuity and informed care as we support you and your goals.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, returning home from hospital, or navigating long-term recovery, we’re here to guide and support you at every stage.

You deserve a team who truly understands your condition, and how to treat it.

Our Commitment to Professional Development

At ONE Rehabilitation Service, we believe that providing the best care starts with continuous learning. That’s why every member of our team (from new graduates to principal clinicians) participates in monthly professional development (PD) focused exclusively on Acquired Brain Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Our PD sessions are practical, case-based, and reflect the most current clinical guidelines and research. We also collaborate with leading external speakers and researchers to ensure our practice remains at the forefront of neurological rehabilitation.

When you work with us, you can be confident your team is:

  • Up to date with best-practice approaches
  • Deeply engaged in complex clinical problem-solving
  • Committed to lifelong learning and excellence in neurological care
